Connecticut junior forward DeAndre
Daniels (Los Angeles, Calif.) scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed 10
rebounds, as the UConn men's basketball team defeated Southern Connecticut
University 93-65 in its first exhibition game of the season Wednesday night at
Gampel Pavilion. Daniels shot 8-13 from the field, and made all five of his
free throw attempts, leading a Connecticut team that was in control of the game
throughout the entire contest.
"I thought I did alright," Daniels said. "I had too many
turnovers, but I was able to hit some shots."
After a three-pointer by Southern Connecticut guard Greg
Langston, which gave the Owls their only lead of the game with 18:38 remaining
in the first period, UConn scored eight straight points to push its lead to
seven behind baskets from Daniels, senior forward Niels
Giffey (Berlin, Germany) and sophomore guard Omar
Calhoun (Brooklyn, N.Y.).
Junior guard Ryan
Boatright (Aurora, Ill.) was extremely efficient for the Huskies
offensively, scoring 15 points on 6-9 shooting. Giffey also finished with double
digit points, as he posted 10 points to go along with four rebounds.
Freshman center Amida
Brimah (Accra, Ghana) provided highlights on the offensive and defensive
side of the ball, bringing energy to the crowd of 5,114 in Gampel with several
blocks and dunks. His five blocks were the most by a Husky in an exhibition game
in the last five seasons. "He's going to be a great player for us," Huskies head
coach Alan Snyder said. "He spreads out, and he keeps his arms up. When they do shoot
over him, he alters a lot of shots."
