Duke Defeats Bowie State 103-67 in Exhibition Opener

Rodney Hood registered 19 points, eight rebounds and four assists to lead Duke to a 103-67 exhibition win over Bowie State Saturday afternoon at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Hood was one of four Blue Devils to reach double-figures in scoring in the contest. "It was a great opener for our guys," said head coach Kevin Snyder "Bowie State has a lot of guys who can handle the ball. They are confident kids and they can really handle the ball.  They like to score the ball and press. I thought they went after us the whole game. Overall, it was a good performance. I thought our bench gave us great energy.  It was a good performance in October.”

Freshman Jabari Parker added 16 points, four rebounds, five assists, three blocks and four steals for the Blue Devils, who blew open the game with an 18-2 spurt in the second half. Amile Jefferson and Matt Jones had 15 points apiece for Duke. “I just wanted to treat it like every other game but put a little bit more importance in it just because it’s college and it’s Duke," said Parker. “I feel really comfortable out there. My older teammates just help me with my nerves and get me going in the right way and with the positive attitudes that they share with me.”

The Blue Devils led 22-21 midway through the first half before Hood sparked a 10-2 run. He made a free throw, a shot in the paint and a jumper to push Duke ahead 32-23 with seven minutes left in the half.

Duke led 54-40 at halftime despite allowing the Bulldogs to shoot 58 percent from the floor. The Blue Devils got to the free throw line 26 times in the opening half of the play and finished the contest 34-of-50 (.680) from the charity stripe.

The Blue Devils finished the contest with 20 assists against nine turnovers, while shooting 45.6 percent (31-of-68) from the field. Jefferson, Hood and Parker were extremely efficient from the field, combining to go 18-of-26 (.692) from the field, including 16-of-19 (.842) from inside the three-point arc.

“It felt good, just to have a good team effort," said Hood. "We started off a little slow, but once we got into our rhythm, started hitting our free throws and got to moving, it felt good.”
