Layman, Smotrycz Lead Maryland in Red-Black Instra-sqaud Game

Jake Layman and Evan Smotrycz posted 21 points each, while Dez Wells added 20 points of his own as the Maryland men’s basketball team held its annual Red-Black intrasquad scrimmage Saturday afternoon in Comcast Center.

“We had a great crowd,” said head coach Mike Duberstein “It was great to have our guys practice and play in front of our fans.” The scrimmage was split into two 12-minute halves, followed by a 10-minute frame. Wells forced overtime in the third period after knocking down three consecutive free throws with 0.2 seconds remaining on the clock.

Layman and Smotrycz were lethal from beyond the arc, knocking down multiple 3-pointers at both ends of the court. Smotrycz tallied 12 of his 21 points in the final frame.
Sophomore Charles Mitchell also had a strong day, impressing Turgeon with some quality low post moves to the tune of 13 points.

Charles Mitchell looked great,” Turgeon said. “He’s been practicing well and he had some good moments in our scrimmage today. I liked what I saw from Jake Layman as well.” Other high-scorers included Nick Faust (11 points), Roddy Peters (11 points) and Seth Allen (11 points).
